Getaway: July 25-26, 2020
From the moment everyone drove into the quadrangle it was a weekend filled with “I haven’t seen you since college” or “you look so familiar, were you here in 1989 or so” to “I’ve been waiting to be back since I was a camper in 1965”! There were conversations about how things have changed but remained exactly the same to campers telling their parents, “it is all a part of the experience"…
Young and “older” were grinning ear to ear as they rode out on the trails during horseback, slid down the pool slide and enjoyed the thrill of staying on Big Mable…or not!
We had first timers enjoying the swinging log and the simple joy found in collecting sticks to build their imaginary campfire to several 4th generation families doing all the activities they remember to the newer activities that have been added.
We had dock starts at skiing on upper lake to diving for watches and finding even more after splashing into lower lake from the Wet Willie! And once again, we had grandparents doing activities with their children and grandchildren and conquering it all, including successful trips to Salt Creek Falls!
There were family “competitions” at shuffleboard, ping pong, tennis, putt-putt, basketball and of course tetherball. And we had moms, dads, and their kids all trying to master the aqua climbing wall!
Our alums led scram and our campers raised the flag. The rain showers we had didn’t stop anyone from enjoying everything they wanted to do. In fact, the “Camp Mac cool down” rain showers were a welcomed addition to such a great day!
For just a little while, those that have always loved Camp Mac shared why they do with those they brought for the first time. And as the familiar camp playlist was heard throughout camp from our “outdoor” Rec Hall, everyone enjoyed a brief escape from these times…even with their masks on!
As everyone waved goodbye and said, “See you next time,” the experience that is found Among the Pines was seen in every single smile on every single face!
